The Marshall Makes a Review Video Part 1: Introduction

Hello Internet! It’s been a while, how have you been? That’s good. I’m good as well, but a lot has happened in those few months that we haven’t talked. I don’t really want to go into it. There, now we’re all caught up!

New Territory

This post is going to deviate slightly from my previous posts in that it’s only going to be indirectly about video games. For a while now I’ve wanted to create a short YouTube video (and maybe a series) that takes a quick look at some of the more obscure games that I’ve played. It would be a video that goes into maybe a brief history of the game, a description of what the game is, how I heard about it, how it plays, etc., a quick look into the game as a whole. Also, I want to do this as inexpensively as possible. I’ll be using free or cheap software, a microphone I bought way back in 2009, and my current laptop. That’s right; this is going to be fancy.

Documentation

I want to use this blog as a way to document the process, mostly as a way to hold myself accountable, but also as a blueprint for others who might be interested in the same thing. I will be documenting all of the triumphs and pitfalls of the whole operation. I’m also not ruling out the possibility of this project falling flat. I might get a quarter of the way through it and realize that I’ve bit off more than I could chew. If that’s the case, than this segment will stand as a monument to my shameful shameful failure, a blueprint of what not to do, and I will weasel back to my cave with my tail between my legs, forever mourning my fragile ego. There is a LOT on the line here. That ego is pretty fragile!

First Steps

Right now I’m looking at this big project as a bunch of mini projects. I’ve broken it down as follows in no particular order: research, scriptwriting, video capture, video editing, and voiceover. I’m sure more will come up as we get going and I will be sure to document them.

I plan on tackling these two first: research and scriptwriting. These seem like good first steps to me and they are the only things that I have any experience in, so after that things will get interesting.

With research, I plan on digging into the history of the game in question, which I don’t think there is a lot of information on, but we’ll see. This will give the game some much needed context because it is a weird one.  Also, I plan on playing it to familiarize myself with it again. It’s probably been 15 plus years since I’ve played this particular game.

So there you have it! I’m eager to get started. This has been something I’ve wanted to do for a while now and I’m glad I can drag you reluctantly along with me. I’m armed with creative writing knowledge, an obscure game, and a Toshiba laptop from 2013, let’s make something!!
